All about Marstrand
Marstrand may be a town in mini format but it does spread across two islands, Koön and Marstrandsön. If you arrive from the landward side you come first to Koön, then take the ferry to Marstrandsön in order to stroll around the island that has been a playground for so many and the scene of many historical events.
Gustav Widell, headmaster of Marstrand’s grammar school, laid out many of the pathways and St. Erik’s park in the middle of the 19th century.
If you have any time over from sunbathing and swimming, there’s a lot to look at around Marstrand island. With map in hand go on a discovery trail through Marstrand’s history and nature.
The time of the bathing cure came to a peak when a dealer at Marstrand decided to rebuild the old salting works into a bathing establishment.
The history of Marstrand is also the history of the Bohuslän province herring period. Plenty of herring spelt success. A shortage of herring was the same as being destitute. King Haakon protected Marstrand.
The things that attract us in the summertime to invade Marstrand are mostly the same attractions that brought King Oscar I, Queen Josefina and Princess Eugenie, King Carl XVI Gustav and Prince Gustav here.
