The nature reserves of Bassholmen and Kärlingesund lie on both sides of Nordströmmarna at Bokenäset. On Bassholmen there is a trail which passes through differing landscapes. The variety is impressive; the trail passing through woods to the east that follow narrow valleys and then into open meadows in the middle of the island. These large meadowed areas provide grazing for the horses during the summer. At the beginning of May the stallions are let out to the cry of “Släpp hingstarna loss det är vår”, or “Release the stallions, it’s spring!” And in the spring fervour, the horses compete to establish rank, which provides an exciting show for the spectators gathered for the occasion.
If longer distance walking is your thing, you should head for the areas of Herrestadsfjället and Bredfjället. There is a trail head for the Herrestadsfjället area at Klämman, some 3 km from road 44 through Herrestad. Several marked trails of different lengths spread out from here. The terrain is predominantly rock plateau and marshland with lots of lakes. A good starting point for walking at Bredfjället is Norra Fjället, which lies some 4 km east of Ljungskile. Three trails of different lengths lead you passed many culturally interesting remnants. In addition to the marked trails, there are many other trials criss-crossing the area.
During the Norwegian period, Bohuslän supplied vast quantities of ship building timber to the Danish fleet, and in Tjöstelsröd nature reserve, just east of Ljungskile, there is an area of huge oak trees that is protected, preserved as a monument to this time. Close by you will find Silverfallet waterfall and Muntras grotta (Muntra’s cave) which has from time to time provided accommodation.
To the northwest of Ljungskile lies the lake, Funneshultssjön, a rejuvenated bird sanctuary. Many types of web-footed birds, wading birds and other species nest here. It also, in the spring, provides an important resting place for many migrating birds such as cranes. During ice-free winters large flocks of whooper swans, goldeneye and mallard gather. A large look-out tower close to the car park offers a splendid view of the activity on the lake.
Skalbankarna (shell banks) at Kuröd-Bräcke were formed at the end of the last ice age. Their lime rich soil has given rise to a richness of chalk based flora and during the summer there are guided walks and butterfly excursions in the area. Another remnant of the ice age is the colossal bowl close to Å. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, during the summer, Friluftsfrämjandet (Outdoor life society) in Ljungskile arranges group kayaking trips there. They also arrange longer kayaking tours.
