Many associate Bohuslän with sunshine, sea and rock. If you want to get really close to these then kayaking is the way to do it. At your own tempo you take yourself around as you fancy via waters protected from the wind and waves of the open sea. The shallow waters around Malo/Flatö and Nordströmmarna are ideal for experiencing bird life and getting really close to cormorants, herons, oyster catchers and wading birds of different kinds.
Paddling kayak around Nordströmmarna is just as much a historical culture experience as a natural one. The famous composer, Evert Taube, spent a lot of time here, and some of his best know verses featured local people and places. Bassholmen to the north of Flatö is a little jewel of an island, the perfect spot for a leg stretch, at the same time as taking in some Bohus boat building culture via a visit to Föreningen Allmogebåtars museum. There are several tips on waterside historical culture in the brochure "Blue Skagerack- Cruising in Historic Waters", which is available from Bohuslän’s museum.
If you do not have your own kayak, there are many places to hire them, like Friluftfrämjandet in Ljungskile and Uddevalla, UteGuiderna and Upplevelsebolaget. There are also courses available, day courses and longer, which help you along with technique, equipment and generally beneficial tips.
If you would like to learn more about the beautiful surroundings you are paddling through, you can book a kayak package, based on day trips and longer excursions.
Good luck with the balancing!
