What would Kungälv`s Cultural Heritage be without all its old Homestead Museums?

Due to a 1971 merger with the rural districts of Hermansby, Kode, Romelanda and Ytterby, as well as Marstrand town, the town of Kungälv has considerably increased. This also means that many of the local historical societies are now placed within Kungälv`s district.

The local historical movement, in the countryside, had already begun by the early 1900`s but it really lifted off after the World wars and many societies were formed in the 1950`s.

It is thanks to the those dedicated people who put in thousands of voluntary hours, working with building conservation, article collecting and documentation that we today have a large number of old homestead museums within the district of Kungälv. They also work with preserving traditions by promoting several arrangements like; cultural wanderings, a Midsummer celebration, film and lecture evenings and local historic days.

Bräcke soldattorp (a soldier’s tenement)

An old soldier’s tenement dating back to 1830. Previously, this tenement stood north of Bräcke village and was transferred to its present location. Since 1965 this soldier’s tenement has become an old homestead museum. The living quarters consist of a room, kitchen and a hall. The vegetation around the plot consists of perennial plants taken from older gardens. Welcome to the Soldier’s tenement- a genuine living environment from the early 19th century.

Burås Mill

This mill has stood on this site, in Glöskär, north of Glöse stream, since it was built in 1892. The mill is a so-called " petticoat -mill with a turn-able bonnet." Grinding flour decreased during the 1930`s and the 1940`s when the electric mills replaced the wind-driven mills.

Burås Mill has been restored and is fully functional and every year arranges " The Mill’s Day" where the general public are welcome to come and see how one used to grind flour in the old-fashioned way.

Dalen's old homestead museum

This old homestead museum’s oldest building is a timbered barn which dates back to the 17th century. The most beautiful building and maybe the most interesting is the 18th century "Hakebolshuset." A simply -built manor farm house, moved from Jörlanda,  which today functions as both a museum and a pleasant and cosy meeting place for small societies get- together`s.

Every Midsummer arranges a much appreciated and well-visited Midsummer celebration and in the last weekend of August there is a popular local historic day where all different handicrafts are exhibited.

Guddehjälm's old homestead museum

About 1800 this farm was reconstructed. The previous manor -like farm-house’s timber was reused in order to build the new farm-house and other building details around the new farm. The manor farm house and its barn are built together in an angle which encompasses the farmyard. The manor farm house is a so-called "framkammarstuga" (front-room).

Kareby's old homestead museum

Arntorps old windmill is located on this farm and lies on Hagen’s Mount in the middle of Kareby`s plains. The windmill is probably from the 18 th century and has been in use right up to the end of the Second World War and is still in functional condition.

The old dwelling place was erected at the start of the 19 th century and then stood in Hägnan but was later moved to Kareby. The house is a so-called simple-building with a kitchen, large living room and front room on the first floor as well as a bedroom with an open attic on the second floor. The interior typifies a 19 th century home.

On the old homestead there is also a blacksmith’s smithy which is a typical 19 th century smithy.

Lid, Romelanda's old homestead museum

This farm has stood on the same site since 1830 ( but originates from the 18 th century).
The manor farm-house is of a quite unusual type.
The bottom floor consists of a room and a kitchen, the upper floor also has two rooms.

A man by the name of Anders Hildeson in Norrmannebo donated parts of his household goods and his collection to the local historical society and with these household pieces the so-called "Kommunalkontoret" (the local Government’s office) has been furnished.

Stenstugan i Hålta

In 1967 Hålta`s local historical society received a gift in the form of an old cabin. "Friskens" was what the village people called the cabin.
The cabin was built in 1870 and was lived in until 1918 when the owner, boats man Olle Frisk, died. The cabin has been refurnished and is a little gem situated by Granmossen on the Vävra mount.
