Market in former days

The Old Market - Gamla Torget

The Old Market Place "Gamla Torget" is the section of the town that has best preserved its appearance.

Still we can see three of the most important buildings;

The Church, The Town Hall and The Pub.

The Church

The beautiful wooden church from 1679 is despite its plain exterior the interior is very interesting indeed with beautiful ceiling paintings. The church is considered to be one of Sweden's mots beautiful baroque wooden churches and has been preserved almost in its original state.

The Old Town Hall

The old town hall was built in 1762. Up to the late 1930's it housed the whole town administration. The house that has been declared a historic buildning, is now used for entertainment purposes by the municipality.

Hotel Fars Hatt

This was previously the site of the old "Stadskällaren" with a lincence from 1702, which was later rebuilt and extended several times until it burned down in 1957. The present modern hotel was built in 1957 and has been rebuilt and extended in recent years.

Västra gatan in former days

Västra gatan

Kungälv is an idyllic little town with a long history. Take a walk through the streets Västra- or Östra gatan with well preserved wooden houses from the 17th, 18th and 19th century sheltered by the mountain Fontin.

Zetterlöfska huset

This is one of the older houses, built in 1762 and has been declared a historic buildning. It was first a one-storey house but a second storey was added in the 1840's.

Schwardtska huset

The charming red woodenhouse is the oldest one in town, built in 1632. The house was once a stable with spaces for horses and drivers. The stable and the house towards the street were then an inn for 200 years. Privately owned.

Boysens

The building is one of the grandest wooden houses, rich in intricate carving work. It was built in 1867 to be a trading house.

Modern shopping street

In recent decades, Västra gatan's noth-western section from Glasbruksgränd to Västra Tullen has undergone a complete change. There is nothing left of the older business and residential buildings.

This part om Västra gatan is now a modern pedestrian precinct with banks, resaurants and shops of different kinds.

Do you want to know more about the oldest parts of Kungälv you are welcome to participate in a guided town-walk Wensdayevenenings at 7pm starting from the Church.
