The Göta Canal

The Göta Canal is one of Sweden’s best known and most popular tourist attractions, and has been named the Swedish Construction of the Millennium.

Stretching from Mem on the Baltic coast to Sjötorp on Lake Vänern, the canal has 58 locks that lift the boats an amazing 92 metres above sea level. In combination with the Trollhätte Canal, the Göta Canal connects Göteborg with Stockholm.

The whole of the Göta Canal is an incredible experience area with a wide range of holiday activities: shorter and longer canal cruises, lockages with your own boat, bicycling on one of Sweden’s most exciting bike trails, unique canalside accommodation, sights, events and many culinary experiences.
