The cranes that come to Lake Hornborga spend the winter in Estramadura in southwest Spain. On theire journey north, to their traditional breeding grounds, they fly in large flocks.

Around 10.000 cranes come to rest at Lake Hornborga each year. The majority of the cranes arrive between April 5 and 10 when as many as 8.000 cranes gather at Trandansen. The cranes choose Lake Hornborga for the corn they are provided with, between one and three tonnes are eaten each day.

The cranes come to the fields at Bjurum when the sun rises and stay until sunset when they return to spend the night on the lake. They dance during the day, whenever the urge takes them. The counting of cranes takes place at dusk when they fly out to the lakde to sleep.

The cranes stay at Lake Hornborga for two or three weeks before leaving for their breeding grounds further north in Sweden.
